Does anyone have any idea how old this monastery is ? I can find no date as such.
And upon my return to Blighty I wish to transport some honey from one monastery to another apiarist Brother John at the Hospital of St Cross & Almshouse of Noble Poverty….

You could try going in and asking. There is usually a historian among the monks.
Have a look at Bernies blog on the monastry http://egyptmyluxor.weebly.com/st-tawdr ... stery.html

He mentions Pharaonic conections near the bottom of the blog.

In view of the depleted bee population in the UK I would expect difficulties in importing honey. It would be best to check well in advance.

Lovely gesture if allowed though. :up

I remember looking this up before my last visit to Luxor as was hoping to buy some honey. I've just double checked and you are allowed to bring in to the UK up to 2 Kilo of honey from countries outside the EU.

In the event I bought mine at El Sheib. It was lovely honey, packed in plastic 'jam jars' (practical just not attractive). El Sheib (out sort of near the airport) dates back I believe to at least the 4th century.

Why not give Brother John both east and west bank honey! See if he can taste the difference.
