Hello all at Luxor4u

Post by Charmaine »

I just joined today, and must say how delighted I am at all the info you share. I am planning my first trip to Egypt for February or March 2016. I am female, senior, solo, and relatively well travelled.

Why Egypt this time? One month ago I received a diagnosis of macular degeneration from an eye doctor. My first thoughts were of what I had always wanted to see (over 45 years of travelling), but had not yet done it. Egypt was right on top. I must see Egypt while I still am able.

I went to another doctor, three weeks later, and I do NOT have MD - in fact my eyes are in great shape and my macula are still beautiful :) . The first doctor must have graduated at the bottom of the class.

Now I am planning this trip, not as a likely last one, but a celebration of many more to come. Please bear with me because I know I will be asking many questions in the coming weeks and months. I have read everything for a couple of years back on TA, and have done much other research. I have narrowed down my wants and needs for this trip, but will be looking for some specific guidance. Is this OK? or am I out of line.

I will sign off now, get another drink, and continue reading on this forum.

Many thanks to all who post and share here.

Charmaine

Welcome to the forum - ask any thing you like - sometimes you'll get a straight answer sometimes not - and your topics will be taken off on a tangent, usually about electric cuts, water cuts and how Egypt isn't doing anything about ....... (fill the dots in yourself).

Glad you've escaped the macular degeneration - mine 'went' in the left eye some 15 years ago.

Feb/March is a good time of year to visit - not too hot for extended sight seeing although you do need to remember that early mornings can be quite cold and a light jacket/jumper is needed for the evenings especially if crossing the Nile at night.

My past 3 Feb visits have all seen rain - that's one or two days of short sharp downpours (and hailstones) - nothing to worry about and it's fun watching the Egyptians enjoying it.

What a relief that must have been. It never hurts to ask ourselves what we really want and where we really want to go, even without such a scary occasion. That is worth remembering.

Welcome.

Welcom to L4U Charmaine. Ask away with your questions. There is usually someone able to answer them for you, although you may have to sift through some of the answers. It will be refreshing too, for us that have been around a while, to read the questions and thoughts of someone planning their first visit to Egypt.

Many thanks for the warm welcome.
I am still at the stage of researching a hotel for a few nights in Cairo. Although the Mena House gets my vote, my wallet disagrees. But, that view!!! There is another very reasonable with a perfect view, but four flights of stairs - no. It may well end up being Hotel Longchamps. with no view.
When I finally get to the Luxor part there will be lots of questions.

Good result on your eyes. :up Now that you are a member of this glorious and truly wonderful home of eccentrics you will find that it runs a very close parallel path to Luxor itself. That being that both will test your sanity at times.

Welcome to the mad house Charmaine. Ask as many questions as you like. But beware of TAs (Tangent Alerts)! Sometimes a post is not what it seems ......

How exciting to be planning your first trip to Egypt. I remember mine well and always will. Little did I think at the time that I would end up living in Luxor. Somehow this place just gets into your heart and soul and there is nothing you can do about it.

Don't worry about all the moaning and whingeing that occurs here - it's par for the course. Just seek advice and use it wisely.

Look forward to your posts. Best wishes. :hi2:

Hi there.

I heard last week that the Mena House is closed. I can't find anything to back up this story, but it may be that Marriott, the new owners, are doing it up.

The usual booking sites, and the hotel's own web pages, do not indicate a closure!

Welcome!

I have a friend who always stays at the Longchamps and loves it. Though he hasn't been for a while so cannot guarantee the standard is what it was when last there (as is the same with all accommodate in Egypt since the revolution and subsequent decline in tourist numbers).

Newbie question here.
Where do I post questions relating to to accom, drivers, dining, cruises, etc. I see that the recommended and not recommended threads are not very active. I expect that is because you folks are all Luxor old timers :D . Who better to get the straight goods from.
Cheers

@ Charmaine - Where in Ontario? (I'm in BC) and if you have any questions just post 'em in the "General" category with a title related to your question. You can also 'search' and you might find your answer but am sure those who live in Luxor can give the best most up to date info.
