I'm anticipating the wonderful day.The tree is up and festooned with lights and baubles,the cards are displayed,the pressies are in process of being wrapped..and the turkey is in the deep freeze.

Hopefully,the preparation will amount to a lovely day spent with family and enjoying the many blessings that Christmas bestows on us.

How will everyone there in Luxor be spending Christmas Day?
Will you be cooking a special meal?
Will you be inviting friends over?
Will you spend it at home,or go out to dine in a restaurant/hotel?
Will you expect some Christmas entertainment/festivities..or do you prefer some quiet,relaxing time?

Bah, Humbug

I come to Luxor, or anywhere abroad, to get away from public holidays and all the distress that they cause.

I am going to market in New Qurna on Tuesday morning to buy a suitable bird that I will share with a few friends on 24th Dec. in the evening. There will be no loud music or party. I will not be celebrating the birth of an insignificant baby on the wrong date just because somebody else's calendar says that I should.

Brian, I am in shock for you to think that an 'insignificant birth' where the whole of Western culture has been built on. How in God's name can you dispute the date of the birth of the baby Jesus.

You will be saying next that this date was fixed by a certain Council by an insignificant Roman Emperor called Constentine in the year 313 A.D., shame on you. .

Quiet has per normal apart from the continuous bouncing of the football against our perimeter wall, screaming kids, and braying donkey's in the nearby cattle stall.
Suppose it will be a normal day really cleaning the dust outside, mopping the outside floors, wiping the marks left by the football off the outside wall, etc etc.

But not to worry, I have just seasoned my bag, tightened the hemp around my reads, tuned a new chanter read, polished my Sghean Dubh, hemped all my joints, sealing waxed the drone reads, polished the silver and Ivory, whitened my spats, pressed my pleats, polished my plaid badge and Sam Brown buckles, feathered my bonnet, dry cleaned my tunic, combed my sporran, it time for me to set people's ear drums rattling, New Years Eve, hear we come!!

I would be working on my new long term project at home but I think that my friend and tenant would stab me. So, instead I will be enjoying a long slow cook of steak and onions in gravy with cheese mashed spuds and settle down to watch the latest complete season of Downton Abby. Phone off.

24th December is also the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed this year (al-Mawled al-Nabawi) so a lot of people will be celebrating that night.

Wouldn't have bothered much but Omar is back in the Christmas spirit, has put a bloody tree up again and flashing lights and today we had a family lunch so he could have a Christmas time with them all (we are working right over xmas so no time for niceties then).

I have a turkey crown and trimmings on order as he wants the Christmas dinner and crap. I had a much quieter time of it all before he got into it
