Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
If there is, I've never seen it. I usually have to wait until the next morning and then go and get my phone top up card. There was a time when friends would get one for me so I had it on arrival but the last time I went I had to go to the shop to get the number re-activated as I'd not recharged my phone in the prescribed time.

it is what you do with what happens to you.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
anyone can send you credit from their own phone, or they can bob into a shop and give your number and have the credit sent direct to you.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
Topping up credit ?
Why be that bothered ? like the idiots that turn on their phones as soon as their plane touches the ground.
Who is really interested ? even if they assume that they are that important.
Lastly 'don't you think it's pretty inane that ones life be subjugated to a ruddy mobile phone as most of the Worlds morons seem to be.
Get a life & not a mobile phone addiction...
Ps: No wonder that there are so many phone muggings when the 'mugs cannot be bothered to observe their immediate surrounding.

Dear Dr - I am important to ONE person, and when my luggage is almost literally the last off the carousel, and Im struggling to get my enormous items of luggage onto the trolley and THEN Im asked to open each item, and Im panicking trying to find the tiny keys for the virtually useless locks so why do I bother..... , and then on opening up half my luggage falls out onto the floor, and then he still wants to check my other enormous piece of luggage, THATS when someone starts to wonder when Ive not appeared about an hour after the plane landed, was I actually on the plane? Thats why some of us need credit on our phones.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
50le lasts me between 6 and 7 months, and a charged battery lasts me between 14 and 21 days. So like you Dr. they do not bother me, only when others interfere with the peace by tap tap tap, using them while out having a meal, and shouting YES!!! when they have just won a game, really puts me off when I am in conversation with them. What did these people do before Mobiles and Smart Phones, I suppose the same as myself, trudge off down to the red box at the end of the drive! Give them a scare Hatusu, they will wait, for you to do all this, if they are interested.

Thanks, Hepzibah. A client arriving has one to contact the transport we've provided. I only know of Vodaphone at Cairo.

Thanks Bennu and Robbo, I didn't know that as I've never needed it. I'll get my husband to do that.

Patience is a virtue, not an addiction since the proliferation of mobiles...

Why on earth would I want to give someone a scare? Why let someone worry needlessly when a simple phone call will reassure them, which is what I would expect anyone to do for me the other way around.

Ahh, the trials and tribulations of being an Englishwoman bearing gifts at Luxor Airport....hatusu wrote: THEN Im asked to open each item, and Im panicking trying to find the tiny keys for the virtually useless locks so why do I bother..... , and then on opening up half my luggage falls out onto the floor, and then he still wants to check my other enormous piece of luggage
You know the saying, beware of Greeks bearing gifts, here they are wary of the Englishwomen.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
Us meer mortals have only personally used car phones since 1984, mind you in 1984 everyone here rode donkey's and lived in Adobe houses.
So, I don't begrudge them their toy's of the 21st Century, just don't become addicted to their ringing tones..
else you live your lives to the 'beck & call of technology. 'saying that....
As I type this, when in reality I could be doing something far more useful & productive....

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
hatusu, get some combination locks instead of fiddling with tiny keys. Get the ones with the biggest number wheels, and in a bright colour to help identify your luggage when it appears on the carousel.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
I would never lock my luggage, as a lock suggests that there is something worth stealing inside. But a good quality strap to hold everything in place is a good idea.
Back to the original topic though, a mobile phone is invaluable in the event that one's driver has not turned up at the airport. But if necessary I can use my non-Egyptian phone for that.
I had no problem keeping my Egyptian phone active for 6 months this summer - charged it once a month and made a local call on it.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
All I can say is - IF you're travelling on a US airlines do NOT lock your luggage as they'll take bolt cutters to it. NOTHING gets locked cause they're gonna not nicely open it.
I had an old but good leather suitcase that had a built in combination. I kept it at 000 but one of the dials slipped to 001 and when I got it back at the Airport carosel they'd cut the lock on the suitcase and after searching my unmentionables put like a zip tie strap to close it up again with a note stuck to the outside - "DO NOT LOCK"
You're definitely lucky the airlines there are allowing you to lock your stuff.

Re: Topping Up Phone Credit
One of the distinguishing features of Russians when they arrive to HRG airport - when there were any - is that their hold luggage is invariably wrapped in yards and yards of clingfilm.
Presumably on account of pilfering at their departure airports?
Certainly seemed to deter any customs search at this end

@Newcastle - they do the same thing all about the Caribbean. All the luggage is wrapped round and round with miles of cling wrap.
