It seems that whenever I try to use the search facility I end up with a message telling me I'm not allowed to use it (can't remember exact wording). Is there any way around this as I have often wanted to look back at old posts but can't find what I'm looking for without a very long trawl through all the posts in each section.

It probably tells you that you cannot use search right now, nothing personal.

You can just take a few breaths and keep refreshing the page until it is ready.

It was set at 30 seconds, I have now set it to wait only 15 seconds between searches, this stops search engines and bots from hogging all the database resources by constantly searching (slowing the forum down)
