Latest update: Summary - on 9 December 2016 there was an explosion on Pyramid Road in Giza, killing at least 6 police officers; you should remain vigilant at all times and follow the advice of local security officials

The advice applies to Luxor as elsewhere.

Sorry Ithought Chris was referring to Cairo because of the recent upheaval there.

there seems to be some confusion around, Sky News this morning (5.30am) reports the FO is warning all but essential travel to Egypt due to terrorist warnings. I can't find it anywhere, has anyone seen or heard of this? It makes you absolutely sick, these warnings and travel advice especially when you live here and know how many places are safer than the Capital. Most people in Luxor feel safe, its just a matter of keeping aware.

Trying to absorb information at 5.30 am is bound to lead to "confusion".

The US State Department has issued a warning :

No changes in the existing travel warnings from elsewhere.....so far.

The fact that you, or I, "feel safe" in Egypt is neither here nor there when a government has to give its citizens advice as to how safe Egypt is to visit. They are privy to information not in the public domain which may give rise for concern. Internet chatter, communication intercepts etc.

Whether any visitor takes note of travel warnings is up to them.

The feeling of safety is always relative to the person and not necessarily the place. I recall sitting in a breakfast outlet in Orlando Florida, a very popular and well policed area of America. Striking up a conversation with some other Brits also having breakfast my wife remarked upon what a lovely holiday we were having and all the places we had visited in our hire car, the Gulf Coast, the Everglades, Key West, the Kennedy Space Centre, Epcot, Bush Gardens, you name it and we had visited the place. It soon became apparent that the man’s wife could not wait to fly home again, she was literally terrified when out and about and saw a mugger or murderer on every street corner. It was one of the safest places I have visited so long as you exclude the greater Miami area, the police presence was high in touristy areas and there had not been any incidents that could have provoked this reaction from her, but she still felt frightened and unsafe, whereas we two would walk around feeling completely at ease, as I said, safety is relative.

Egypt should have listened to the World Bank. :tk
