Why is America great?

This is an American program called ‘The Newsroom’, but it is quite remarkable for what is said further into the video when a member of the audience asked the question “what makes America the greatest country in the world” when he is pushed for a reply (at around the 3 minute mark) the newsreader character McAvoy gives a very honest answer. Although it is a TV programme, what he actually says may surprise many people, especially those living in the land of the free.

Brilliant!
Justifies Trump's mantra....."to make America great again".

America did lose its 'greatness' some time ago, but by my reckoning, 'Great' Britain lost hers a lot earlier.

When was Britain ever 'great'.....other than in the imperial/militaristic sense

Misconception there folks, ‘Great Britain’ is a reference to the other parts of our island that includes Scotland and Wales and our numerous islands, as in ‘London’ and ‘Greater London’ to define a larger area than the city itself, it was never intended as a boast, although many saw it as such.

Perhaps when it was not being constantly run down by people.....

And just what has he got to be careful about A4? I just wish you would shut up with your oblique references to people being denied a say on here. What you are really ****** about is that not many people agree with you so you make your snide remarks, for gods sake man myself and Newcastle argue all the time about something or another and so can you if you have the intellect to take him on instead of just whingeing.

Perhaps.
Care to be more specific i.e. state when, in your opinion, Britain was 'great' in the general sense of the adjective?
The Express was able to come up with 20 reasons why, in its opinion, Britain is 'great' :
Weather; Cricket; Gardens;Tea; Shale Gas;Imagination; Moaning; Two World Wars and one World Cup; Snobbery; Pop Music; The sandwich.....etc.etc
http://www.express.co.uk/comment/expres ... n-is-Great
I assume they're being serious - but I'm not impressed.
Perhaps you can do better.

I am really sorry about your outburst here Horus. Who mentioned your name here, or for that matter any other ?
In the near future, I hope to write up on here a subject post on 'broad church' and I certainly do not mean the TV program, but as I look through the member list who look regularly on here though make no comment, were members of a similar type of forum who met quite often in Luxor.
When, in the past I have put up a subject post, I try to check several time a day for any sensible comment that needs a reply, over the next few days I shall be very busy, and unlike some can not make 'drop of a hat' comment, who might have little or nothing else to do,............so will try and post early next week.

.
P.S. - DJKeefy has advised me that I should not comment after

, and we're getting quite near that, so although maybe another may appreciate a future further comment this evening,.......I will not.

Keeping tabs on members who log in but never comment must be a riveting pastime. Do you keep a diary?
P.S. If Keefy advised you not to comment after

he was only thinking of your liver and the effect too much has on your command of the English language.

In the general scheme of things I would say that this country has contributed just as much to the world as any other nation has, it all depends upon the criteria used to judge ‘greatness’. Was Egypt’s civilisation any greater, or the Ottoman and Roman Empires, each one gave us something and they all took something away or behaved in a way that we would find unacceptable today. I think what Zooropa is alluding to is the constant put down by many people of the country that we call home, it is as if people are no longer proud of their country and take any opportunity to take a swipe at it and dare I say that criticism or cynicism often comes from people born here but living elsewhere in the world, it is almost like a justification for being where they are, but often their chosen place of domicile is a worse place than the one they openly criticise. To paraphrase William Shakespeare
“Some
countries are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them” as in the case of
Great Britain.

Can't wait. I do hope I don't miss it. I seem to miss so many of the posts that you promise us all. Even the posts you refer to in a historical context I never seem to find.

As countries go, I'd say the Britain of today has a pretty good record in matters I would regard as criteria for greatness.....although it also has its faults
And if I read into your comment, Horus, and the previous one of Zooropa, the suggestion that I regularly run down or criticise my mother country, then prove it with examples.
You won't find them.
Unless you're still holding me to account for thinking we may be making a mistake in heading for a hard Brexit.
Maybe I'm being over-sensitive to remarks made partly in jest.
I've always considered one of the praiseworthy aspects of British society the ability to have a rational discussion about anything and to hold differing opinions without being subject to unfair criticism.
I also hope - in fact I'm sure - you don't feel that living in Egypt debars me from having an opinion on any matters pertaining to Britain. I grew up in the country, contributed fully to it for half a century, continue to pay my taxes there and would certainly return there if my health required me to.
By contrast, there's an awful lot I could find to criticise about Egypt although, as a guest in the country, it's perhaps not my place to do so...and possibly not the wisest thing to do, other than in fairly oblique terms

That brings to my mind one of the excellent aspects of life in Britain...a goodly number of specialists in coronary disease, available free - and without judgment!
