The Met have come up with a new idea to recruit police detectives, no longer will they have to serve their time on the beat but enter the force directly as a junior detective.
I can see this being a very attractive way of recruiting,

I never see any police on the beat nowadays when I'm in the UK. The only time I see them is at events such as football matches and concerts, but that's not the old fashioned beat.

Good grief...they'll be scouring the globe for retired ex-plods next and offering them inducements to get them back into harness ;)

I don't think they would have any problem filling the posts, it's the lack of any vacancies.

I always know when a survey on behalf of the police is about to land on my telephone line.

For the proceeding week you start seeing police walking the streets, smiling, actually attempting the pass the time of day with you.

I kid you not, when i lived in one of the more undesirable parts of Leicester this happened at least three times.

Its a scam most surveys are, the questions are designed around the answers that the commissioner wants.

I remember the third time it happened and i got a call from a polling company.

"Do you feel there is a police presence in your community"?

I answered "No, apart from the week before the police have commissioned a survey and they send everybody out onto the street"

Of course, as soon as the survey has been carried out they return to being as rare as unicorns.

  The same goes for council rates hikes, it's the only time you see a road sweeper doing it's single pass 'flymo' impersonation :D

I could think of one that would turn out to be an unmitigated disaster if accepted. :a64: ''Morning officer, is that your truncheon in your pocket?''

''No, my 3..x2.., now **** off.''
