A spokesperson for Channel 4 has confirmed that the Labour politician Diane Abbott will replace Rachel Riley as the show’s presenting assistant from July 1st, provided that Labour do not win the General Election.

According to her secretary, the role has been arranged as Ms Abbott is keen to have a ‘back up plan’ in the event that Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t come out on top on June 8th.

Channel 4’s head of entertainment Charles Flummox added: ‘Rachel has served the show incredibly well, but we decided that it was time to go in another direction.’

‘Ms Abbott just has an incredible head for figures, and initial auditions have been very positive.’

‘OK we had to replace the pen eleven times in the first hour, and we had to remind her what it means when you rotate the plus sign by 45 degrees, but other than that her performance was solid.’

Although Channel 4 bosses are reportedly excited about the news, there have been some concerns about Ms Abbott’s previous support for rival BBC game show Call My Bluff after photos from the 1980’s emerged of Abbott enjoying Pie and Mash with Sandi Toksvig.

The news should bring a huge ratings boost to the flagging quiz show, with viewers turning off in droves after Joey Essex’s appearance in Dictionary Corner.
