Hi folks!
Can you recommend any cheap(ish) simple preferably Egyptian restaurants or cafes? A lot of the places I know from before, or are recommended by lonely planet, seem to be closed.
We got fleecedion chez omar today (50 le for fresh orange juice that was actually fanta! " but quite enjoyed cafe latte.
We will also go to some of the nicer restaurants but want to balance things out eating more simply as well.
Thanks in advance! [*]

Re: Simple / cheap eateries in Luxor
I visited a lovely little place when i was in Luxor last Christmas. It was very popular with Egyptians, including ladies. It served typical Egyptian foods - the grilled meats, salad, dips, bread, etc - at a very good price. It is located on 'Emilio St.'. If you stand at the end of the Tourist Souk looking across the to Local Souk you will see Chez Omar on the left, the 'garden' in the middle, and then to the right there is a very small Egyptian Cafe - the door is in the wall and could be missed, but there is a grill outside and a small hole in the wall. Unfortunately I don't know the name of this place, but I do recommend giving it a try. I know it's almost a year since I was there, but at the time it was incredibly clean and neat, even if somewhat compact!
Pizza Roma in St. Joseph street has always my 'comfortable to go alone' restaurant, but although it was still good last year, I did not think it was as good as it had been on all my previous visits when the lady was in charge.

I'll second the Pizza Roma as the best in town, even if slightly below it's previous standard; it's still well above other places.
Oumm Hashem's for Egyptian cuisine. There's the old place with it's upstairs section (no views) and it's new half diagonally across the street, which has an outside area too.

From memory it's almost behind the Egyptian place I suggested.SoCalledEgyptologist wrote:Thanks all for great tips!

Go into the local's souk from Chez Omar end and Oumm Hashem's is a little way in and over to the right - possiblly just down the next street. It's on a corner. (Sorry, that's as clear as mud, but it is in that general area.)

I've just remembered a real good and renowned Egyptian restaurant. Its at the top of Television street, down the small side street on the left hand side of the entrance door next to the new B-TECH electrical store. Any taxi driver will know where it is [B-TECH] Can't remember the name, but it serves all the well know Egyptian dishes, the most expensive is around 50Le. Its still open as I looked at the menu Thursday as I waited for an item from the storeroom opposite it.

Go to where the tourist souk ends and the local veg one begins (heading north), turn left and literally follow your nose: they have a kebab/kofta grill outside and lots of tantalising smoke. Or just ask a local as they all go there. Never had a bad meal there and my husband loves it and won't eat Egyptian anywhere else on the EB. We prefer the older venue upstairs, as it's cooler in the heat, though sometimes at night will eat outside at the new one for a change. Any Aussies we've taken there liked it too as their first try of local food, and ask to go again.SoCalledEgyptologist wrote:Thanks all for great tips!
