Queen's Birthday Honours

Post by newcastle »

Two of my favourite authors in this year's honours :

Prof Mary Beard

Image

Occupation: Professor of classics, University of Cambridge and broadcaster

Honour: Damehood for services to the study of classical civilisations

Quote: "I'd like to treat it as a bit of a tribute to the Greeks and Romans themselves - as well as to all my wonderful academic colleagues who also do so much for the study of antiquity."

Ken Follett

Occupation: Author

Honour: CBE for for services to literature and charity

Quote: "I am very pleased and proud to receive this honour for doing something I love - making books and stories as entertaining and accessible as possible."

Just a shame that their own personal achievement will probably be diminished by some other useless person being included in the list, the head of Network Rail springs to mind Mark Carne.

I daresay he did, Likewise Kenny Dalglish. There must be hundreds of thousands involved in comparable charitable works but you can always rely on a footballer or two being honoured by a nation totally obsessed by the game.

We need more of the likes of former sex worker, New Zealand's Catherine Healy. who was honored by Britain's Queen for her work advocating for prostitutes.

At least Rosemary Powell was rewarded for selling poppies for 97 years. Good luck to her and her 'retirement'
