It was a shock yesterday when the duty-free shop in Luxor, near KFC, announced that they no longer sell alcohol (within 48 hours of arrival). One has to purchase it at the airport immediately. Not very convenient when one is tired after an overnight flight, and has heavy baggage in tow.
It will be a long, dry winter!
For the benefit of future travellers to Luxor who want to max out on their Duty Free Allowance -
Are there any 'in town' Duty Free Shops in Luxor nowadays? If so, where are they located?
Is it best to shop in the Duty Free Shop in Luxor Arrivals regardless of whether or not there is a Duty Free Shop in the town?

The one near Karnak temple is now closed, so the one near KFC was the only one. Man can live without booze.

Re: Luxor - Duty Free Shops
Oh, Hepzibah, now that you mention it: At arrival, I had waited a looooong time for my luggage, so I stopped to look for the driver on my way to the duty free shop, just to let him know where I was. A man came to wave me into the shop, shouting that this would be my last chance, as they did not sell alcohol in town.
I only have good experience with the staff there, but I heard it as:"Egyptian market this way, wanna know how much, scuseme, want a horse, hello, scuuuuse me!"
I was going anyway, and I did get some blended Scotch and gin.

There's a booze shop on the road between the Souk and the railway station that sells all kinds of alcohol including some of the old whisky that was available in the UK yesteryear! The prices are very reasonable.

No I hate the stuff. Now set me up with a fine VSOP Cognac then you'll be talking. The trouble is I couldn't find any, only the local stuff fit for cleaning a toilet is available.
