The legal firm Law Help in Egypt is a frequent advertiser on social media. This gem appeared yesterday :

a marriage register in the Ministry of Justice and the embassy of your country in cairo

On enquiry by interested parties ( not me!) it transpires that the process is simple...you sign, in your home country, a power of attorney in favour of Law Help in Egypt, get it legalised at your Egyptian embassy, FedEx it to Egypt and, hey presto, the lawyer represents you at the “nuptials’ in Cairo and you’re legally married....hopefully to the guy you intended to marry ( but for some reason were unable to meet up with in Egypt).

Can you imagine an easier way to get scammed!

Would anyone be mad enough to risk this!!

I suppose it would save you the $25 visa on entering Egypt.

A bargain then!

I wonder if the 80 year old has seen this perhaps someone should show her.

I have given this much thought and on the whole think it's a brilliant idea.
The lawyers upon request could send you a group of photos with pictures and vital statistics of available men.
Then you could choose. The men would have to give details of their marital status and just how much or what they wanted for entering into a marriage.
Save a lot of trouble and aggravation.

Why? Just why?

Reminds me a bit of a programme I watched a while back.
A young (19?) American girl went to Lebanon to meet her (20+) Syrian boyfriend. Her mum, who was very against the two being together, and yet supportive/protective of her daughter, went along too. She decided it was better than ultimately becoming isolated from her headstrong daughter.

Anyway, mum finds out they intended to marry on this trip. Very upset, she goes along to the mosque with daughter and son in law to be for the wedding ceremony. They end up in this little office with two men from the mosque. The imman and the young man proceed in Arabic and papers are signed. When it comes to the girl and they ask where her witness is (meaning father or brother) her mum says it's her. They won't allow that as she's on her own. There has to be one man or two women. The mother is clearly upset by this, but you can see she really hopes it will mean they can't get married. The officiate then tells them they can sign and give him power of eterny to represent the girl. No mention of when that power ends.

So the girl is now married to her Syrian man, with Lebanese wedding documents in Arabic, and an elder 'official' holding power of eterny over her. However, he has to get back to Syria and she has to go back to the USA to work on the spousal visa for her husband that she met online but had never met in person before going to Lebanon for little mire than a week.

All a bit crazy and ill thought out.

I have been asked for advice (not that they would listen) by women who would probably welcome such an opportunity!
