The Moulid of Abu El Haggagg

Post by Teddyboy »

I'm sure that members will be familiar with this festival, but thought it may well be worth reminding everyone about the fun to be had in these dismal days. I posted on Trip Advisor about the annual stick fighting bonanza which takes place just outside our building, at the top of Yousef Hassan St, and when I went to watch the fun, last night, for an hour or so, I did notice some foreign faces among the crowd. It was great, as usual!
For anyone who may be interested to go along and watch or join the fun, it'll be on again tonight. Start time is around 8pm (Egyptian time, of course) and it goes on till they've had enough. There's no charge for watching, (I did drop the band a few quid, though) and last night Mr Shazly (one of the 'organisers') even managed to clear a dikkeh to offer some tourists a seat! I wrote 'organisers', because more or less all they do is close the main road and provide seating, the rest is an organised Egyptian shambles, as you'd expect, but great fun nevertheless.
Give yourselves a treat tonight, it's marvellous to see people having so much innocent fun, for a change. I does you good!

I see that the main event of the Moulid has been cancelled yet again. This 'carranaval' hasn't been allowed for a number of years now. What a pity! In my experience, this has been the only day of the year when Luxor truly 'comes alive'.
Of course, it's obvious that it would be cancelled for 'Security' reasons this year. If you haven't experienced it, or need a reminder to buck up your day, have a look at the following Blog entry:

It is a shame the Carnival or Dora as a Caleche kid told me it was called. I think the stick fighting is called Taktib. When I went to my first Carnival Egypt came alive like never before. Talk about letting their hair down.. I was offered an opportunity to enjoy it on horseback. That would have saved me from being hassled on the ground. That passed and I got back to the excitement, noise and amazing energy. They let their hair down and release a lot of energy before Ramadan takes it out of them.
