How One Man in Egypt Is Keeping This 200 Year Old Tradition Alive

Post by HEPZIBAH »

No matter where I have travelled in the world, I have appreciated seeing old crafts being kept alive, either in traditional format or in a manner that keeps the tradition alive but meets the modern world lifestyles.

Amongst my favourite memories of visits to Egypt are those connected to having visited various crafts people and workshops in and around the general Luxor area. As I write, I think of the man with his little shop on the Cornich patiently sewing his applique wall hangings, cushion covers etc. or of the craft centre out near Seul (sp?) on the West Bank, the Pottery at Garagos and the wood work training centre close to it. All places I have spent many a happy hour observing - and coming home with a souvenir or two.
One thing I have never seen being made is tiles. To be honest, I've never seen many fine examples of tile work, unlike for example Morocco where I can spend days just wandering and photographing the numerous different colourful tile designs. However, I have just been made aware of the following video about a tile maker in Cairo. I've only just started watching it but thought I'd share it as I think others may appreciate it too.

Respect :up Who had imagined so much work going into creating each tile? Friends who import these tiles from Cairo tell me that there are always very few on the market, I cannot wait to hear their response to this video.
Thank you, Hepzibah :a25:
