Their people want what we have, namely plenty to eat and more of the nice things of life, plus freedom of thought
We’ll have to disagree as regards the aspirations of the Russian population….and of that not dissimilar oligarchy - China.
In regular surveys carried out by Western analysts, it’s apparent that a large majority of the Russian and Chinese population are satisfied with their mode of government. The absence of “ freedom” seems to count for very little.
I appreciate this is hard to swallow if you’ve been brought up to think of individual choice and freedom as sacrosanct….but there it is.

No need for any disagreement here, newcastle. Of course you're right (as usual!) my point (poorly worded, also as usual!) was, that the increasing cultural Westernisation of former Soviet Block countries, and the likelihood that this increasing will continue, is the actual threat to which he is responding.
It's undeniable that there is a (not insignificant) movement in Russia which deplores Putin's invasion, and I believe that it, too, will also continue to grow, and that he will continue to stamp on any resistance as it comes to light. But it is there and growing, all around him.
China, on the other hand, is an entirely different scenario!

Well….if Putin’s aim is to curb the “ westernisation” of Ukraine ( because it might spill over into Russia) he’s going a funny way about it! Whatever pro-Russian element ( if any!) there was in central/ west Ukraine must be thoroughly appalled at the wanton destruction he’s inflicting on their country.
There’s a predominantly pro-Russian population in the Donetsk region. Let them have autonomy..independence even. They should be careful of what they wish for!

Russian foreign minister Ladvarov claiming Ukraine has chemical and biological weapons (provided by US of course).Won’t be long before there’ll be reports of their use….
Straight from the Russian/Syria playbook .

Quote: "London football clubs have thrown open their doors to Chelsea supporters"
Now that was a funny joke I thought..
They always ruined a lovely Saturday afternoon as we sat in the window of the Goat & Boots on Fulham Rd,
after leaving Holmes Place Health Club and sauna bar opposite.
They have converted their window seat, I noticed.
So it's a toss up twixt Nick's ex, Page moving in or a Ukrainian.
I'm glad I have been stuck here for 2 years watching World events unfold.
In Egypt one tends to observe World events from afar..or not at all..afterthought!

There’s been a 46% rise in UK cases over the last fortnight and some worrying developments in China where entire provinces are being shut down. This new wave seems to be affecting over 55’s in particular and it remains to be seen whether it translates into a significant rise in hospitalisations or deaths.
Of course the attention of the news is all Ukraine at the moment…….but there’s clearly some cause for concern.
New daily UK covid cases for 14th March Weekend cases 170,985 .......

What amazes me is the average age of Ukrainian MPs.
When the Russkis left Prague in the 90's I was there.
We used to drink with the new leaders in a bar beneath their Občanské Forum,
They dressed as they did in the 60's all denim and levi's.
And this is us with their 'monty python anti-ruski acting team.
In their finest Prague restaurant called Opera.
Every second person in Prague looked like a spy and acted like one....

Change the record mate
It’s not so much that we’ve got it licked…but it no longer a problem.
Within a few weeks the entire population will have antibodies…acquired via infection or vaccination.
Then, like herpes….or the poor….we can acknowledge that it’ll always be with us and “ one of those things” that carries off the odd ( invariably already sick) bod. Most of us will just have something extra to moan about….like colds, flu, hot flushes etc etc.
Unless a nasty variant emerges.
Then we’re all DOOMED
