Oops! what are these?

Post by BBLUX »

We bought these the other day. They were with the dried fruit and nuts section and we thought they were some sort of roasted bean.

And the packet

They are bullet hard so not what we thought.

So, the question is what are they and how do we use them please?

Hmm, how curious! Well, the packet says 'buqoliat'. They look like mini fuul beans to me :dun:

Btw, I love your dinner plate! Where did you get it from??

Edited to say that I've just checked Google Translate and here ya go!!

They could be coffee beans, but without tasting them and handling them I would not commit myself. :dun: :dun: :mb:

They definitely aren't coffee beans.

I think they are the true fuul bean which is slightly smaller than the fava bean (Yep, I did consult my book of beans!)

Regarding the plates  they all have this funny sMile emblem on the bottom and we have a stack of them...they came with the apartment.

Back to the beans, so Fuul beans how do you cook them then, boil them to death for 8 hours or is it simpler than that? Next question, having never eaten anything which I knew for certain to be fuul but might have done, what does the end result look and taste like?

Boiling them to death is a bit extreme, bless their little beany hearts! Fuul is normally made by cooking over a VERY low heat overnight. But I suppose you could stick some in a pan - bring to the boil and leave for a few hours and then bring to the boil again for a couple of hours.
Or you could just try pre soaking them in some water over night - and then bring to the boil the next day for a while.

As to what you do with them, other than make fuul, is beyond me! But then there are multiple versions of fuul - so you could experiment. My favourite Fuul variety is: After they've cooked, put some oil and butter in a pan - add garlic and tip in the beans - serve either mashed or not.

But you can add onion, garlic and chopped tomato
Or Tahina
Or Just plain olive oil
(Says Goddess as she tries to remember what the other varieties are on the Mohamed Ahmed Menu!)

Or stick them in a casserole!

Right, we have and use a slow cooker so perhaps we could lob them in that with some other casserole ingredients and let the lot fester for 5 or 6 hours. See what comes out then.

I remember the freebie Maccy D's plates MM. They came in four colours or patterns. I was too skint to afford A Maccy D's meal at that time though - so missed out on the plates (Could have done with them too, since I didn't have any plates at all until my mum took pity on me!)

Someone had very kindly treated me to a meal there and lo and behold we got a free plate !! which was very much needed  Only got the one though.
I was thrilled when I got a teaspoon from the teabag box and the Nescafe glasses were the only ones I had  I did manage to get quite a lot of those and they are still going strong. Well most of them are

Barry, fuul looks like the mashed bean mixture you get with Mexican food eg. nachos. But doesn't taste as good, IMHO!
