I've just read Bitter Chocolate by Sally Grindley.
No, it's not a book about the delights of eating good quality, high cocoa content chocolate. In fact it is far from it although it has made me think a bit more about where I get my chocolate from. But that is all by the by...
This is a book aimed at the younger readers - probably age 10+ - although I believe it should be read with some parental guidance. It would probably appeal to boys more than girls. It tells the story of Pascal a young Guinean boy and the horrors he has to face because of civil war and his ending up 'working' on a cocao plantation.
... One thing I'm not sure about is how well a young reader would cope with time/scene changes with some of the chapters. Even as an adult I had to double check a couple of times.
A moving and thought provoking book - and well worth reading. I shall look out for more books by this author.
For the teachers and parents of young children among us.
