According to most forecasts there will be some rain and wind Thurs/Fri...mainly on the North coast.

I doubt you’ll notice it in Hurghada or Luxor.

Now he tells us after I have spent the last hour cleaning my back balcony and making sure everything I store there is covered.
I have however uncovered a box with 14 container top lids. Two I can account for I broke the bowls that they covered, why I kept the lids I have no idea. The others despite hunting for the plastic containers that they fit unsuccessfully, I am faced with a dilemma.
Shall I be brave and throw them away, or is that too much of a challenge after disposing of two empty varnish tins, a tin of white emulsion that's dried up, three spray bottles, some cleaning products that I never use, think I will hang on to them just in case.

There you go Carrie. Weather forecasts - accurate or not - have their uses.

My experience of weather forecasts in Egypt is that the worse the prediction, the less the actuality.

And the really nasty events seem to come as a total surprise!😂

The potential of flooding too?
Hmm... a bit of confusion over the date. Thursday is 12th March. 14th March is Saturday. (As long as they keep 13th March as Friday I'm OK and won't miss my tea party.)

I have a healthy concern over the latter, but never give the former a thought beyond trying to turn other people's negative ideas around the date into positive ones.

From information I am getting it seems there will be continuos rain throughout tonight especially in Upper Egypt, and more so in the western hills of Luxor. If this information is correct, then it could be the perfect storm to produce a flash flood through either King's or Western Valley by as late as 4 p.m. (Local time) tomorrow.

Few people have lived after being faced by a sudden wall, twelve feet high thundering through the hills of The West Bank. It would be wise to close the King's Valley tomorrow as a precaution.

Egypt's public, private sector employees taking Thursday off due to unstable weather

A press conference was held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Egyptian cabinet to discuss the measures taken by the government to deal with the "unprecedented" unstable weather forecast for Thursday and Friday.
The press conference was attended by the minister of water resources and irrigation, the minister of foreign affairs, the minister of development, the minister of state for information, the minister of civil aviation, and the chairman of the Meteorological Authority.

Earlier in the day, the cabinet said that Thursday will be a paid day off for employees in Egypt's public and private sectors. The country's stock exchange and all banks will also be closed, and schools and universities will be shut down nationwide on Thursday.

"This press conference aims to inform the public of the seriousness of the situation and to urge citizens to commit to the recommended procedures," Minister of State for Information Osama Heikal said during the press conference, stressing that people should remain in their homes on Thursday and Friday.

Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel-Ati reviewed a number of precautions and procedures that the ministry has taken to cope with the situation.

The procedures include reducing drainage from Lake Nasser to accommodate for the amounts of rain in the Nile and canals, and reducing the level of lakes.

"The procedures aim to alleviate damages to protect citizens and facilities," said Abdel-Ati, adding that dams built during the past four years in North and South Sinai, the Red Sea governorate, and the Western Desert will prove useful in dealing with the situation.

Eman Sayed, the head of the Planning Department at the Water Resources and Irrigation Ministry, said that the degree of danger is compounded given that the rains will continue for two consecutive days.

"The expected high level of danger from the continued floods for two days comes from the saturation of the land with rainwater, as the degree of its water absorption decreases, in addition to the reduction of the absorptive capacity of drainage networks," Sayed said.

Egypt has no comprehensive rainwater drainage system, and only relies on a 105-year-old drainage network to siphon rainwater. In an earlier statement on the floods that brought Cairo to a standstill last October , the cabinet said that Egyptian cities were built without rainwater drainage networks.

“Our country is characterised by dry weather, and the cost of setting up a network costs billions of pounds and our financial resources do not allow it.”

The governorates of New Valley, Matrouh, Giza, and Minya will be the most affected by the heavy rains, which will peak on Thursday, Sayed said. By early Friday, the rains will be concentrated on Egypt's northern coast.

"The rain is set to recede on the third day, Saturday, reaching the usual quantities that we frequently see in many areas of the country," she added.

During the press conference, Egypt's Minister of Civil Aviation Mohamed Manar reviewed the situation of Egyptian airports, saying that a contingency plan is currently being implemented, and "all necessary measures will be taken to ensure everyone's safety."

On Wednesday, EgyptAir called on its clients who have flights in the coming 48 hours to arrive at airports at least four hours prior to their international flights and three hours early for domestic flights, a statement by the Egyptian carrier said.

Mahmoud Shahin, director of the analysis department at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, said, "This level of instability in weather conditions has not occurred with such force since 1994."

Minister of Local Development Mohamed Shaarawy said that his ministry is coordinating with the Meteorological Authority and the Ministry of Irrigation to address the situation during the coming days.

"The government started preparing for this wave of unstable weather four days ago. A state of emergency has been declared in all service agencies, while coordination is currently underway with the directorates of security and civil protection and the Armed Forces," Shaarawy said.

"It is expected that some areas will witness 60 to 70mm of rain," the local development minister stated, adding that the country will experience "unprecedented heavy rainfall."

The last heavy flooding to take place in Egypt, which occurred last October and brought Cairo to a standstill, reached 15mm of rain, overflowing drainage networks.

Shaarawy also urged citizens to check official governorate web pages, which will post updates and news about the expected floods.

The minister said that one of the reasons Thursday has been given as a day off is to ease traffic congestion and "give room for the concerned agencies and emergency teams to move freely and swiftly. In addition, some roads might be temporarily closed while making available alternate routes."

It is a real shame that Luxor, let alone the West Bank do not get a mention here.

The present flash flood defences down from either the King's Valley or the Western Valley, divert such a flow down towards the plain that is south of Gabawi it then is allowed to run its course towards the north of Sitt Zaban, (better known to Westerners as Carter House). Where in the distant past, such flash floods seriously damaged the nearby Muslim cemetery . Now any such flood would be in a direction to the north of this position.

I know in the past some Europeans lived in the foot hills of the so called Thoth hill, known locally as El Suil, it has suffered in the past from serious flooding, though today you would not believe this from the new houses built there in the past twenty years.

I will say again, Luxor is expected to see serious rain fall throughout tonight and tomorrow morning,.....avoid the foot hills of the West Bank Luxor at all cost. Even when the rain stops, flash floods can arrive four to six hours later.

Further to my written work above, tourists and Europeans living on the West Bank should avoid most sites in that area, including Wadi-El-Gabi, better known to Westerners as Scarab Valley.

Flash floods on the WB usually occur once in a life time, though in recent years this has been more often, 1979 and 1995 to mention two. The flash floods are one thing, but brought along with them is the thousands of tons of liquid shale, that once settled often more than three feet high, is then baked in the heat of the sun, and sets as hard as concrete.

Few Egyptologist's today realise this when studying the Western Valley, and thus accounts as to why there have been few findings there.

I have just seen this which was posted today, again a translation from the Arabic, which also tells of previous flood conditions in Luxor.

Luxor News Live
·
The most affected level.. What happened in the 1994 weather like tomorrow?
The region of the level was the most affected by the fall of the flooding, according to the newspaper "the free" on November 5th of the same year, where the number of failed houses in the villages of teeth rose to 1500 houses, which led to the attack of scorpion and Snakes on citizens

Lord deliver.

One rainy January day in the early 2000's, when I was visiting Luxor, I recall a friend telling me he remembered that when he was younger houses on the West Bank 'melted in the rain' - obviously meaning the mud bricks were dissolving with the large amount of rain and flood water. Much of his grandparents West Bank home fell down, trapping his grandmother who later died of her injuries. I don't know what year that was though.

Last time I remember the flash flood warning, I ran around covering all the tops of my bare mudbrick walls.
Now when it rains it really rains, I mean it really rains, But only once in a blue moon,
One only has to look at the Amenophis 3rd temple, that isn't! as it all got once washed away.

It rained for 10 minutes that time, but be prepared and buy those white wellington boots, just in case..
Being honest, I don't think Egypt has ever had a decent Meteorological Office of much worth, being totally honest.... 8)

Ps: It rains most days over here, I love it, hopefully it will be raining tomorrow..

Well very windy yesterday sand everywhere but as yet no rain. The sky is blue again though instead of that grey miserable colour. So reminiscent of the UK.
Looks like we have got away with it. Wind still blowing quite strongly.
