Film Sets

Post by HEPZIBAH »

In another thread, some comments have been made about the latest film adaptation of Death on the Nile, This has included mention of film sets and locations. This set me wondering about films that are plot set in Egypt and actually filmed there.

These days, many films requiring a desert or Arabic look are shot in Tunisia or Morocco. Not so long ago there was an excellent psychological thriller series - The Night Manager - which was set largely in Egypt. Anyone who has visited Morocco would likely have spotted that all the Egyptian scenes were shot on location in Morocco. A shame as there were glaring obvious differences in architecture, decoration, transport etc.

Can you list some films that have been fully or partially shot in Egypt and kept some integrity with the required location etc.

One of my all time favourites. I’m not sure I would have ascribed the Cairo hotel to Morocco (as Hepzibah says...it’s in Marrakech) but I’d be pretty damned sure it wasn’t Cairo!

As if.

I’d imagine the difficulties of filming in Egypt would minimise any time actually spent there. Indeed, it’s really been out of consideration since 2011 for big budget movies. There is so much footage available of the pyramids, Nile, Luxor temples etc that there’s really no reason to endure the discomforts of actually lugging your cast and crew there. Modern computer graphics and general wizardry have rendered “ on location” filming an unnecessary luxury.

The only films that spring to mind as having had significant crew and actors in Egypt are The Spy Who Loved Me , ...and, going back a bit, the 1978 Death on the Nile and The Ten Commandments.

The latter was filmed in and around MT Sinai. Can’t see that being repeated somehow.

I thought it an excellent series. Definitely a nail biter one for me.

I can't remember the name of the Moroccan hotel that was used, but it was the doors which gave it away for me.
Other Moroccan clues were when the went to hide out in a small house oht of town, they travelled by a taxi, only this was a typical Moroccan 'grand' taxi. The house was also very Moroccan with its beautifully tiled courtyard fountain/sink. The tagine inside could have been purely decorative if there hadn't been so many other clues that it was being filmed in Morocco and not Egypt.

Islington Council has a film department that makes filming dead easy round here.
They have a dedicated street Northampton Row,
the council earn a fortune off all the film companies trailers, food wagons
stars trailers, wardrobe, makeup, ect ect.
Reminds me of circus fairgrounds sometimes, like little self contained villages.

All the inhabitants round here play ball, pubs, clubs, cafes, church's, streets and houses, smithfield ect..
Everybody is on an earner and it's fun plus big plus,
all the film fanatics tourists flock around taking 'snaps at weekends.
oh! And we have a few film production companies around abouts..
and directors and a few actors... 8)

Ps: Islington ain't daft, only Jeremy back amongst his allotment...

The Night Manager's Nefertiti Hotel, Cairo (Marrakech, Morocco)
Hivernage | Es Saadi Hotel, Marrakech | Morocco

The Night Manager's Nefertiti Hotel, Cairo (Marrakech, Morocco) Location

In episode one we see the drama unfold in heart-racing scenes based in the fictional Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo. The filming actually took place at the Es Saadi Hotel Resort and Gardens in Marrakech, Morocco.

This stunning hotel is one location that you can both visit and stay at as well as taking in the rich culture of Morocco. While this is rated as a 5 star hotel some reviews in our research show it to be a little dated whereas others have held it in high regard. Either way if you want to get close to the scenes while in Morocco you won't get much closer than this.
