Mask wearing in public to be made compulsory

STARTING NEXT SUNDAY, NOT WEARING A FACE MASK IN PUBLIC COULD NET YOU AN IMMEDIATE EGP 50 FINE

Starting next Sunday, January 3rd, a new fine will be given to those who don't wear face masks in public, in response to a spike in Coronavirus cases that the Minister of Health has referred to as the 'second wave' of the pandemic. On top of the recent decision to shut down mass public gatherings - particularly around New Year's Day - Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has announced that the government will instate a EGP 50 fine for those who are caught not wearing a face mask in public. Unlike previous the previous fine for this offense, which could have cost you anywhere up to EGP 4000 after being officially sentenced and prosecuted, the EGP 50 fine is to be given out immediately the moment you are caught on the street.

From what I’ve seen on social media, most people think this is laughable...but we’ll see.

It’s not clear how “public” will be interpreted.

When you consider the “success” of fines for not wearing a seat belt.....I don’t hold out much hope for this move.

Do the wrong doers get a receipt? Doubt it, but one thing I don't doubt is a sudden upsurge in bulging pockets stuffed with these on the spot fines.

Well ventured forth today prepared to be faced with this new mask wearing, obedient, law abiding population.
Surprise surprise, saw 6 people wearing masks, two of them had them on under their chins, don't know if that counts.
Police rode past none wearing masks, micro bus, no masks, tuk tuk drivers, yes you have guessed no masks.

They’re a bit like Green Shield stamps.

Collect 6 and you can exchange them for a mask at your nearest cop shop.

The law only applies to passengers on public transport ( not pedestrians or those in private vehicles )....not sure if tuk tuks qualify.

CAIRO – 3 January 2021: The Egyptian authorities began on Sunday applying a LE50-fine on people who fail to wear a mask while riding public transportation or in closed spaces.
The police as well as those who have citizen’s arrest powers, mainly at government institutions, can apply the fine, even if a person has a mask on him but does not wear it. If he fails to pay the fine, he will be referred to the prosecution.
The police were seen in streets on Sunday checking that drivers and passengers in public transportation vehicles wear the mask.
Pedestrians and those in private vehicles are exempt from the fine.
The Health Ministry announced that Egypt registered 1,407 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, raising the total number of confirmed cases thusfar to 140,878.
In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said that the death toll in the country was raised to 7,741 after 54 patients died from the virus over the past 24 hours.”

@Dusak

I think the government have already conceded that the number of infections announced is only 10% of the actual....because only people with severe symptoms get tested!

Likewise deaths. Unless you die in hospital having been diagnosed as covid- infected, you aren’t counted.

For a second day Luxor police fine Egyptians  for not wearing masks.

The Luxor Traffic Department headed by Brigadier General Hatem Hamdoun continued for the second day in a row, to apply the immediate fine to citizens who are not wearing protective masks while they are on public or private means of transport, as part of the implementation of the Cabinet's decision regarding taking precautionary and preventive measures to protect citizens and limit the spread of the new Corona virus.

The Luxor Traffic Department published fixed and mobile campaigns and ambushes prepared by officers of the General Directorate of Luxor Traffic, under the supervision of the Director of Luxor Security, Major General Essam Yassin, aimed at ensuring the commitment of taxi drivers and passengers to wear medical masks, while taking all necessary legal measures against violators.

On the other hand, the Luxor Traffic Department has implemented extensive campaigns to remove abandoned and dilapidated cars, whether on the main or secondary streets in the various cities of the governorate, in implementation of the directives of Luxor Governor, Counselor Mustafa Elham, to preserve the cultural appearance of the governorate. ]

" unless you die in hospital" my friend has just told me that it was on the news yesterday that 13 patient's receiving treatment at the International hospital here failed to wake up the other morning. Why? The on duty staff had been instructed to reduce the flow of oxygen during the night to save on supplies and costs. It was reduced to only 3% flow, hence they all died.

I would see it as an advantage to wear a mask in Egypt for tourists, not for obvious reasons. Shades and a mask can aid against hassle. They see nothing they can read. Does or did the two metre rule apply in Egypt other than for sensible tourists and Expats? If so did that lessen the hassle? Or was it enough that theyvregarded tourists as the new Lepers?

'Corona! Corona!' They cry running away every time they see a tourist.

Social distancing has never been applied here with the exception of waiting your turn in the banks, but not all banks. From the very beginning up to today the local transport is still in 'sardine' mode. When this virus first reared its ugly head in Luxor, we white faces bore the brunt of the blame while walking around the city, much finger pointing and crying out for a mass culling lol. Thankfully this attitude only lasted for as long as the average span of the Egyptian thought process.
