Egyptians stocking up amid fears of unstability

Egyptian citizens have begun stocking up on food supplies fear what may follow 30 June protests on Sunday.

Attiya Hammad, deputy chief of the division of bakeries at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, said that there is high demand on all types of bread, adding out that queues have been stretching for long distances from outside the Ministry of Supply.

Hammad added that the division is currently facing a crisis, with the majority of its workforce returning home in Egypt's governorates for fear of escalating events.

The Ministry of Supply ignored the division's demand 2 weeks ago to meet the minister and agree on back-up plans for the period between 30 June and Ramadan.

Amr Asfour, deputy head of the ministry's division of nutrients, said a number of companies distributing food suspended work and granted employees a vacation, starting last Thursday, ahead of this weekend's demonstrations.

A number of companies also stopped shipments for fear of exposure to theft, Asfour said, anticipating a breakdown in law and order.

Mohamed Wahba, head of the division of butchers, said demand on meat remained normal, but had increased on poultry. He said that citizens prefer to store cheaper goods that store better over longer periods of time.

This panic buying usually creates an even worse situation in the long run. I could of spent many thousands of Le on food this Thursday, but only bought what I usually buy. The supermarkets were at normal capacity when I was there. Can you imagine the problems that will be created if all the shelves were empty when the poorer people that can only shop on a day to day basis suddenly find that there is nothing left as we ''wealthy'' folk have stripped the shops dry? I'm against panic buying, always have been, but that's just me.
